Continuing a tradition of showcasing bold, exploratory exhibitions curated by the University of Kent’s Fine Art students, framed by the stunning backdrop of one of the country’s most iconic locations, the Historic Dockyard Chatham, our visitors will encounter a broad range of artistic styles and media, an explosion of imagination and a celebration of art’s potential for society.

This exhibition offers the public a fascinating insight into contemporary art’s most recent practices and processes, such as an animatronic head discussing the purpose of humanity, metabolic waste forming a cavern, an ice archive documenting a community’s closure, an artist’s family responding to their real eviction by ‘squatting’ an exhibition space to make a form of 'home', and an intense ritualistic performance inspired by fried chicken takeaways. Paper screens, repurposed clothing, meringues, mycelium, digital architecture, language, translations and musical composition, dance, poetry, outsized toys, gender, power, post-humanity and the post-colonial are just some of the themes  and media brought together by our artists.

One of the aims of our Degree Show is to encourage audiences to explore the potential of Medway as a dynamic hub for art, with the School of Music and Fine Art as a major conduit for these activities, positively impacting on the community and offering imaginative suggestions and visionary strategies for cultural regeneration.

The Fine Art Degree Show exhibition catalogue features a discussion between some of our alumni. On 19th May Resonance FM will be dedicating a radio programme to our exhibition, with audio experiments and student interviews.

Degree show visitors will have the opportunity to attend a variety of creative, enjoyable workshops and activities ranging from treasure hunts to cocktail-making workshops with the artists. Group education days will offer attendees guided tours of the show, talks from the artists and the chance to produce their own artworks in response to the exhibited work.

The Degree Show Address:

The Historic Dockyard, Chatham, Kent, ME4 4TY

Entry for the private view is via The Galvanising Shop (next to the Dockyard’s visitors’ car park on the East Road, and for the rest of the exhibition, via The Historic Dockyard Chatham Visitor Entrance).
